A Planar Underactuated Compaction Mechanism with Self-Adaptability for Automated Fiber Placement Heads

Automated fiber placement (AFP) systems accommodate complex-shaped structures by pressing fibers against the non-planar surfaces of mandrels, in which compaction mechanisms are crucial significance. A conventional mechanism utilizes an independent actuator with compacting rollers to conform surfaces. Compared these mechanisms, underactuated can improve self-adjustability and functionality. This research introduces concept design analysis a planar for automated heads. Firstly, requirements premise determined. Then, novel bistable structure is constructed based on metamorphic theory. Secondly, analytical models established give insight into motion characteristics mechanism. Moreover, example simulation results presented verify conceptual design. Furthermore, standard deviation contact force much lower than that under equal conditions. Finally, potential application discussed. Thus, this shows designed increases adjustability, robustness, high repeatability positioning be used simplify planning AFP when producing complex structures.
